The unexplored matrimonial and genealogical ties between the Kingdom of Denmark and the Belarusian Principalities, as well as their historical and cultural connections, inspire this article. 1 Sophia and Valdemar had nine children, two of whom were kings of Denmark in their time. ![]() However, Belarusian principalities maintained strong historical connections with Denmark, and the marriage of Sophia, a daughter of Volodar of Minsk and Richiza of Poland, to King Valdemar established a permanent practice-for the next 500 years Danish kings only married foreigners. Belarus has been considered a terra incognita in Denmark, a country whose name in Danish (“Hviderusland”) has had a connotation of a white, blank spot on the Danish mental map of the world.
